As Zoe floated along the forests just as they reared up ahead, Toby made some small adjustments to the helm, and she slowly turned to face where they’d come from.

There, close to the edge of the sea, lay Shorecroft, and while it was only a small town in reality, it was quite spread out along the shoreline. They had left only an hour ago, so the town was about seventy miles away, but from here and at this height, it looked closer. From here, only the colors and the general layout could be seen, but Sue had still wanted to turn to look back, and Toby had accommodated her as best he could.

She nodded at Toby and said, “We’re about a third of the way between Maxwell and Shorecroft, right?” and that got her an “Aye, Ma’am” back. She smiled at Javor who was seated beside her in the seating area behind the cockpit.

“From here to Maxwell, it’s quite a bit of real estate to be responsible for,” she said, her voice a bit lower in volume to keep it between just the two of them.

Javor grinned at her. “You’ll do fine, Sue—you have the skills to govern this region, and I’m sure of it. So is Vera and Maeve too, so you’re covered,” he said.

She nodded but she wasn’t finished with her doubts. “But a region with one state—Shorecroft—is not where it’s going to end. I’ve got to get out and find others,” she said.

He smiled at her. “And yes, I know, there aren’t really many more big towns like Shorecroft to find and pitch to. But there are others though, like maybe the tribe we met under the interstate—remember, the ones that helped save us from those zombies? Or how about Walkerville too … surely there’s folks there that will come on-board once their own army base is cleared up of their zombies, right?” he asked.

Sue nodded and the conversation dried up. Toby took her okay and turned Zoe to point once again north by northwest toward Maxwell.

Below them, the plains that ran toward the sea gave over to the forests that sprung up the farther north one went. Railway tracks lay below too, but no trains had ridden them since the Boathi attacks. The forests that surrounded them were not as thick as in the far north, and occasionally a regional road went by and farms could be seen. A gas station well below had a whole bunch of cars and trucks parked all around it, and Javor wondered why that might be, but they cruised over at ten thousand feet, and there was no real reason to stop to check. At a farm some miles farther on, there looked like there were a bunch of people who’d emptied out of the farmhouse to all stare up and point at Zoe.

Toby offered to make a slower approach to Maxwell and Sue okayed same.

“Better to sneak in low so that we don’t attract too much attention,” she said, and Toby nodded back his agreement.
